Open or Closed King Kamehameha Day Sunday June 11

If you live in Hawaii, you are no doubt aware that June 11 is King Kamehameha Day. On this day, Hawaiians enjoy parades, parties, and the King Kamehameha Hula Competition. The 101st annual King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade will take place on Saturday, June 10 from Iolani Palace to Kapiolani Park. This year’s theme is Hooilina Pulama Na Mamo or “Passing the Torch.” The King Kamehameha Statue Lei Draping Ceremony at Aliʻiolani Hale in downtown Honolulu will be held on Friday, June 9. Needless to say, there is lots to see and do on and around June 11th!

Because King Kamehameha Day falls on a Sunday this year, the state holiday will be observed on Monday, June 12, 2017. Schools and state offices are closed on Monday. Most banks and credit unions will be closed.

In Honolulu, TheBus and other public transportation will run on a State Holiday schedule. The Kauai Bus will be operating on a modified schedule. Garbage will be collected as per normal schedule and transfer stations will be open. Satellite City Halls and Driver Licensing Centers (DMV) will be closed.

Some stores will be closed, but other retailers will be open with King Kamehameha Day sales and deals. Ala Moana center will be open both June 11 and June 12. Some restaurants and shopping malls feature special promotions as well. Sometimes, these promotions extend the entire weekend of the holiday. Be sure to call your favorite stores and restaurants for their specific King Kamehameha Day hours as well as information on particular sales and deals they may be offering.

Happy King Kamehameha Day, Hawaii!
