Open or Closed King Kamehameha Day Tuesday June 11

March 17, 2024

If you live in Hawaii, you are no doubt aware that Tuesday, June 11 is King Kamehameha Day. On this day, Hawaiians enjoy parades, parties, and the King Kamehameha Hula Competition. The annual lei draping event of the King Kamehameha statue at Ali‘iōlani Hale in downtown Honolulu is a major event. This will be followed by the 108th King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade from ‘Iolani Palace to Queen Kapi‘olani Park. King Kamehameha Day is a state holiday and a pretty big deal in Hawaii. Whether you live on the island or are just lucky enough to be visiting during this time of year, there is lots to see and do on and around June 11th!

Because it is a state holiday, schools and state offices are closed on King Kamehameha Day. Most banks and credit unions will also be closed. In Honolulu, TheBus and other public transportation will run on a State Holiday schedule. The Kauai Bus will be operating on a modified schedule. Garbage will be collected as per normal schedule and transfer stations will be open. Satellite City Halls and Driver Licensing Centers (DMV) will be closed.

Can you go shopping or eat out on this day? Of course! A few stores will be closed, but most retailers will be open with King Kamehameha Day sales and deals. Honolulu’s Ala Moana center, Hawaii’s largest shopping mall, will be open on June 11. Some restaurants and shopping malls offer their own special promotions and celebrations. Sometimes, these promotions extend the entire weekend of the holiday.

State workers have King Kamehameha Day off as do many private sector employees. Be sure to call your favorite stores and restaurants for their specific King Kamehameha Day hours as well as information on particular sales and deals they may be offering.

Happy King Kamehameha Day 2024, Hawaii!
